Soldier Protection System

The Soldier Protection System (SPS) provides the Soldier with a modular, scalable integrated system of mission tailorable ballistic protective subsystems at a reduced, from current, weight while maintaining the same level of ballistic protection and mobility provided by the current PPE systems.

Soldier Protection System (FY2016)

Subsystems

  • Integrated Head Protection System (IHPS): head, maxillofacial, and hearing protection
    • consists of a helmet, with provision for adding a mandible and/or visor, as well as for mounting an applique to the outside of the helmet for additional ballistic protection
  • Vital Torso Protection (VTP): hard armor
    • provides the same or better ballistic protection than the current baseline suite of torso (ESAPI/XSAPI) and side (ESBI/XSBI) plates.[1]
  • Torso and Extremity Protection (TEP): soft armor
    • Modular Scalable Vest (MSV)
    • Ballistic Combat Shirt (BCS): for extremity protection, intended to function as a ballistic Army Combat Shirt (ACS)[2]
    • Blast Pelvic Protector (BPP): for pelvic and femoral artery protection
    • Load Distribution System (LDS): integrated within the TEP and provides the capability to redistribute the weight burden from the shoulders to the hips.
    • Ballistic Battle Belt (B3): a stand-alone weight distribution system (WDS)[3]
  • Transition Combat Eye Protection (TCEP)
    • consists of either ballistic spectacles or goggles to protect the soldier's eyes as well as provide the capability to transition from light to dark and dark to light in one second or less to enhance the soldier's vision in varying combat conditions.
    • added to the Authorized Protective Eyeware List (APEL) later.[4]
  • Military Combat Eye Protection (MCEP)[5]
  • Integrated Soldier Sensor System (ISSS)
    • measures blast and blunt trauma (head) along with a physiological status monitor.[6][7]
